The Philadelphia Eagles have taken a significant step in their search for an offensive coordinator by interviewing former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. This news was reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, highlighting Nagy’s extensive history with the Eagles and his past coaching under Andy Reid.
Nagy began his coaching career with the Eagles, serving on their staff for four seasons from 2008 to 2012 before reuniting with Reid for nine additional years in Kansas City over two tenures. His time as head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018 to 2021 was a mixed bag; he initially led the team to a promising 12-4 record in his first year, but struggled in subsequent seasons, finishing with two 8-8 records followed by a disappointing 6-11 mark in his final year.
Notably, during his tenure in Chicago, Nagy was able to help quarterback Mitchell Trubisky have a Pro Bowl season in 2018, which featured respectable numbers of 3,223 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, albeit accompanied by 12 interceptions. However, Trubisky’s performance declined in subsequent years, a factor that contributed to Nagy’s dismissal after the 2021 season.
Following his departure from Chicago, Nagy returned to the Chiefs as offensive coordinator. Despite his previous success, the 2022 season saw Kansas City’s offense ranked 20th overall, with even star quarterback Patrick Mahomes facing challenges. The team failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2014, which ultimately led to Nagy’s exit after the hiring of Eric Bieniemy as his replacement.
In addition to his candidacy with the Eagles, Nagy was reportedly a contender for the Tennessee Titans’ head coaching position but lost out to 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. As he seeks to revive his coaching career, a role as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator could present an opportunity for Nagy to regain his status in the league. His history with the franchise and experience under Reid may position him well to contribute positively to the Eagles’ offensive strategies moving forward.
As the Eagles continue their search, there is hope that Nagy could bring fresh insights and experience to enhance their offensive play and work towards a more successful season ahead.
