On Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles continued their search for a new offensive coordinator by conducting a second interview with Jerrod Johnson, a candidate with previous ties to the organization. NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reported that Johnson, who currently serves as the quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans, met with the Eagles in person following an initial virtual interview.
Johnson’s history with the Eagles dates back to 2011 when he spent two weeks on the training camp roster before being released. His coaching background includes three years as an assistant under Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni when Sirianni was the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2019 to 2021. This connection may provide Johnson with an advantage in the interview process.
Since joining the Texans’ coaching staff in 2023, Johnson has received praise for his role in developing rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, who has shown significant improvement. However, Johnson’s candidacy comes with its challenges. He interviewed for the Eagles’ offensive coordinator position in 2024, but Kellen Moore was ultimately chosen for the role. Notably, Stroud’s performance regressed under Johnson’s guidance, highlighted by a disappointing four-turnover game in Houston’s playoff loss to the New England Patriots.
The Eagles have also conducted second interviews with several other candidates, including Sean Mannion, the quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers; Jim Bob Cooter, the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts; and Josh Grizzard, the former offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While Johnson’s ties to Sirianni could bolster his chances, he is facing significant competition and may not be the frontrunner for the role. Nevertheless, his past association with the Eagles and recent coaching experience could position him as a viable candidate as the organization continues to make critical decisions for future success.
