Eagle County Cyclists Gear Up for Epic Leadville Trail 100 Challenge!

Eagle rider Michael Anderson is among 44 cyclists from Eagle County gearing up for the esteemed 2025 Leadville Trail 100 MTB, set for August 9. Known for its grueling challenge, the Leadville Trail 100 MTB has built a reputation as one of the most demanding mountain bike races worldwide since its inception in 1994.

The race features a daunting 105.3-mile out-and-back route that ascends more than 12,000 feet, reaching its peak at the Columbine Mine turnaround. As part of the Life Time Grand Prix—an off-road cycling series where professional cyclists compete for a lucrative $380,000 prize—this event draws some of the nation’s top endurance athletes. For many local riders, participating in the Leadville race is a dream come true.

Chris Caruso, an Avon native, considers the race the ultimate mountain biking challenge. As he prepares for his Leadville 100 debut, Caruso aims to finish in under nine hours, but his priorities extend beyond time. “I’m an average working dad who loves the bikes and outdoors and wants to go do something hard,” he explained. His goal is to inspire his daughter by showing that dedication and hard work can lead to achieving ambitious goals.

In this challenging journey, he earned his entry by finishing strong in his first mountain bike race, the 2024 Silver Rush 50, where he improved his time significantly this year. Fellow athlete Michael Dorr, an age-group world champion, is also making his Leadville debut, having completed several tough races this past year, including the Boston Marathon and the Unbound Gravel 100.

Dorr reflected on the unique atmosphere of the Leadville race, which brings the community together. “The community is out, the people on the course cheering—(that) is what makes the race special,” he noted as he aims to beat his personal record.

For the first time, the Leadville Trail 100 MTB will be broadcast live, starting at 5:45 a.m. MST. Fans can follow the race via the Life Time Grand Prix YouTube channel or the Life Time app, along with GPS tracking for elite athletes.

Ron Gruber is set to participate in his eighth Leadville race, thrilled to compete alongside his son, Robby, for the first time. Their shared month of training in Vail has allowed them to bond over their passion for biking and preparation for the race, highlighting the familial connections that the event fosters.

This year’s race promises an exciting mix of competition, personal achievement, and community spirit, showcasing the resilience and dedication of Eagle County cyclists.
