Dyson Daniels Sparks Hawks With Breakout Season, Lands $100M Extension

Dyson Daniels has significantly elevated his performance with the Atlanta Hawks during the past season, transforming from a player with modest statistics into a standout contributor, ultimately earning the Most Improved Player award for the 2024-25 NBA season. After showing solid defensive skills with the New Orleans Pelicans, where he averaged 4.8 points and 3.5 rebounds over two seasons, Daniels experienced a breakthrough after being traded to Atlanta last July.

In his new role as a full-time starter for the Hawks, the 22-year-old showcased impressive improvements across the board. He averaged 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game, while leading the league with 3.0 steals per contest. Furthermore, Daniels showcased his scoring efficiency, raising his field-goal percentage to 49.3% and becoming a viable three-point threat with a shooting percentage of 34.0%, marking significant enhancements from his time in New Orleans.

Daniels’ defensive prowess played a critical role in his ascent. Not only did he lead in steals and steal percentage, but he also achieved a remarkable 3.7 defensive win shares, ranking 18th in the league. His elite performance on the defensive end earned him a second-place finish for the Defensive Player of the Year award, with 25 first-place votes, narrowly losing to Evan Mobley. Additionally, his efforts secured him a spot on the NBA All-Defensive first team, reinforcing his status among the league’s top defenders.

With his recent success, the Hawks have committed to Daniels by signing him to a lucrative four-year, $100 million rookie contract extension just ahead of the season’s start. This move underscores the franchise’s belief in his potential and signifies their commitment to building around him. Previously, he was set to enter the final year of his rookie contract, earning $7.7 million next season before the extension was finalized.

Daniels’ development is particularly promising for a Hawks team that has faced challenges in recent seasons, missing the playoffs in consecutive years. His presence and growth could be pivotal as Atlanta aims to enhance its competitive stature in the league. The franchise seems optimistic about what Daniels and their younger core can accomplish together moving forward.
