Boston Red Sox player Jarren Duran has issued an apology after using a “horrific” homophobic slur directed at a fan during a game against the Houston Astros on Sunday at Fenway Park.
The incident occurred during the broadcast when Duran was at bat in the bottom of the sixth inning, and an Astros fan shouted a taunt, “you need a tennis racket.” Duran’s response, caught by a live microphone, included an expletive followed by a homophobic slur.
After the Red Sox’s 10-2 defeat, Duran expressed his remorse in a statement, saying, “During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan. I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility.” Duran also committed to using this experience as a chance to educate himself and his teammates.
In response, the Red Sox released a statement reinforcing Duran’s apology and emphasizing their commitment to inclusivity. The team addressed the incident with Duran immediately after the game, stating, “We echo Jarren’s apology to our fans, especially to the LGBTQ community. We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches, and staff on the importance of inclusivity.”
There is a possibility that Duran could face disciplinary action from either the Red Sox or Major League Baseball, as similar past incidents have resulted in suspensions. In 2017, Matt Joyce of the Oakland Athletics received a two-game suspension for a similar outburst, and Kevin Pillar of the Toronto Blue Jays faced a two-game suspension later that same year.
Jarren Duran, 27, has been with the Red Sox since 2021. He previously played for several minor league teams, including the Worcester Red Sox and Portland Sea Dogs. Earlier this year, he was named MVP of the 2024 MLB All-Star Game after hitting a two-run home run for the American League team. Prior to Sunday’s game, Duran was recognized as the 2024 winner of the Red Sox’s Heart & Hustle Award, honoring players who exemplify passion and dedication to baseball.
