Cameron Williams, a 6-foot-11 standout defensive player from St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix, made headlines on Friday when he committed to Duke University. Expressing his enthusiasm, Williams referred to Duke as his “dream school,” a sentiment he has held since his childhood. “I feel like the coaching staff truly believes in me. I feel like they see me going there and producing a lot and having a big role. It’s just exciting. I can’t wait,” he shared.
Williams appears to be an ideal addition to head coach Jon Scheyer’s system, known for its emphasis on height, versatility, and strong defensive play. His long and agile presence on the court has drawn comparisons to Khaman Maluach, a formidable player from last season. With his ability to switch defensively, Williams could complement Duke’s lineup effectively, especially alongside Bryson Howard. Should Duke also secure the commitment of Jordan Smith from Paul VI, a school with a history of sending players to Duke, the team’s defensive capabilities would greatly enhance.
In his discussions with ESPN, Williams praised Coach Scheyer for being relatable and genuine. He noted that he appreciated the atmosphere during practice, where Scheyer’s intensity was matched by his ability to connect with players. “My family felt the same….The energy in that place was crazy, and it truly shows how much support the basketball team has from everyone,” he said.
As Duke continues to build its roster, Williams’ commitment signals a promising future for the program. The excitement among Duke’s fans and supporters is palpable, especially with the engaging content provided by the university’s social media team that celebrates new recruits.
