Officer Among Drunk-Driving Arrests as Fiji RBT Crackdown Hits Nadi and Suva

DUI crackdown nets police officer among arrests as road-safety drive intensifies

A police officer was among ten individuals detained for driving under the influence during intensified Random Breath Test (RBT) operations carried out in Nadi and Suva last night. This enforcement effort marked the third consecutive night of operations along the Nadi–Namaka corridor, where a total of 351 drivers were tested. Out of these, nine arrests were made, including the police officer who was reportedly found driving while intoxicated.

In a separate operation in Suva, authorities screened 450 drivers, resulting in one arrest, while three others were released after their alcohol levels were found to be within legal limits. In total, thirteen drivers tested in Nadi were let go due to their readings being below the legal threshold.

Law enforcement officials have reiterated their commitment to enforcing the law fairly across all road users, including police personnel. This initiative is part of a larger strategy aimed at reducing alcohol-related incidents on the roads and improving overall road safety. The emphasis on accountability serves as a critical reminder of the severe consequences of drunk driving and underscores the ongoing efforts by authorities to promote safe driving practices within the community. This approach not only protects drivers but also enhances the safety of all road users.
