Fiji 7s debutant Apete Narogo is set to make his international rugby debut in Dubai, motivated by a deep sense of responsibility to his vanua, family, and the nation that has shaped his journey. At 23 years old, Narogo, hailing from Nakorovou in Serua, has taken an inspiring and determined path to the national squad.
His passion for rugby ignited during his school years at Lomary Secondary School, where he focused primarily on sevens. Narogo openly admits to prioritizing rugby over academics, even skipping classes and significant exams to participate in competitions. “I ran away during one of my biggest exams just to go and play rugby at the Wairiki 7s. This was my first tour,” he recalled.
Narogo’s selection for the national team reflects years of perseverance and unwavering faith, especially after enduring several setbacks in his pursuit of national representation. The call-up to the extended squad was a moment he cherishes deeply. “This has greatly challenged me because the rest of the players are representing their ‘vanua,’ and I also have to represent my ‘vanua’ to the best of my ability,” he said, expressing his commitment to do his family and country proud.
His rugby potential caught the eye of selectors earlier this year when he excelled at the Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s, where he was named the tournament’s best player while playing for Semi Radradra’s Ubuntu team. The upcoming Dubai 7s, set for November 29 to December 1, marks the beginning of a new HSBC SVNS season that fans are eagerly awaiting.
Narogo’s story resonates with many aspiring athletes in Fiji, reflecting a narrative of hard work, determination, and hope. As he prepares to don the white jersey of Fiji and represent his nation on the world stage, his journey serves to inspire others in their quest for excellence in rugby. The opportunity to showcase talent and compete at a heightened level signifies a promising future for both Narogo and the Fiji 7s team as they step into a new season filled with potential.
