Investments in sports infrastructure and youth initiatives are seen as pivotal for ensuring Fiji’s social and economic future, reinforced by clear strategies for inclusion. The Drua Foundation has taken a significant step by launching a youth academy aimed at achieving gender equality by 2029, with a goal of achieving equal representation of 180 boys and girls in various training programs.

Shane Hussein, Head of Commercial and Marketing for the Fijian Drua, underscored the foundation’s commitment to gender equality and inclusivity while outlining the academy’s strategic roadmap. The initiative is currently expanding from one training stream to two, with an initial emphasis on boys. However, a third training stream for girls is set to be introduced by 2026, in response to the increasing participation of girls in rugby. Hussein anticipates a marked growth in the pool of talent among girls by 2027, making it a strategic time to start the girls’ stream.

By 2029, the Drua Academy aims to support three training streams for both boys and girls, each accommodating 30 students, ultimately reaching a balanced total of 180 participants. To facilitate this, plans are underway to enhance infrastructure, including the construction of dormitories to ensure that weekend camps can provide the necessary privacy and comfort, particularly for female players.

Hussein highlighted the critical need for sustainable growth and adequate funding to avoid financial pitfalls. “We would love to do everything at once, but we simply can’t,” he remarked, emphasizing the goal of nurturing talent while carefully managing resources.

The Drua Foundation is committed to creating impactful opportunities in Fiji, extending its focus beyond rugby to touch on health, education, and social outreach. Through collaborative efforts and partnerships within the community, the foundation aims to instill programs that foster meaningful change for Fijian children and their families, paving the way for the next generation of rugby stars. This substantial investment in youth programs and infrastructure reflects a positive and forward-thinking vision for Fiji’s sporting landscape.
