The Fijian Drua Academy has recently gathered Fiji’s most promising young rugby players to prepare for the under-16 and under-17 development squads for next year. After months of intensive scouting during the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby competitions, over 50 players from each group have been selected to take part in this program. These athletes will undergo various phases, including medical evaluations, strength and conditioning assessments, physical testing, and technical coaching before final selections are made.
The Fijian Drua Academy, which was officially launched last year, is predominantly led by Ben Takubu. He notes the expansion of the program this year, as it includes both the recruitment of new under-16 talents and the introduction of under-17 players for the first time. This initiative underscores the Academy’s commitment to identifying and nurturing young talent from across Fiji.
From an initial pool of over 250 players, 56 under-16s and 58 under-17s have advanced to the next stage. These numbers will eventually be reduced to 30 players in each age group, who will then receive contracts under the 2025–2026 Drua Academy Program. This approach not only highlights the Academy’s dedication to developing young talent but also its strategic aim to create a sustainable pathway into professional rugby.
The establishment of the Academy marks a significant milestone for rugby in Fiji, indicative of a broader commitment to developing a robust framework for aspiring rugby players. The program provides specialized skills training, guided by Drua coaches and high-performance staff, and sets a precedent for fostering athletic excellence. By reducing the pool of candidates to 30 in each grade, the Academy ensures focused and personalized training. The opportunity for these young athletes to be part of the Drua Academy signifies a pivotal step towards advancing their rugby careers.
This initiative not only enhances the current landscape of Fijian rugby but also instills hope and inspiration in young athletes across the nation, showcasing the depth of talent within the country. The continued expansion and success of the Drua Academy are poised to contribute significantly to the future of rugby, not only enriching the local sports community but also potentially impacting the international stage.
