Driver failed to follow officer’s instructions in fatal Naseakula Road checkpoint crash, LTA says

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has reaffirmed the integrity of the checkpoint on Naseakula Road, where a tragic incident involving a police officer and a cane truck occurred, resulting in the officer’s death. CEO Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that claims regarding inadequate warning signs or the improper placement of cones at the checkpoint are unsupported by the evidence collected.

Technical assessments conducted after the collision indicated that the truck involved was free from mechanical issues. The investigation highlighted that the accident was primarily due to the driver’s alleged failure to adhere to instructions from an authorized officer, a situation exacerbated by wet conditions and the truck’s heavy sugarcane load.

Rokosawa pointed out that the findings indicate driver negligence and a significant disregard for road safety. He also highlighted that the LTA’s collaborative efforts with the Police focus on addressing various high-risk behaviors on the road, rather than merely inspecting vehicle conditions.

As road fatalities have alarmingly increased to 72 by November 28, compared to 56 during the same period last year, Rokosawa expressed concern over the tendency to misplace blame on law enforcement officials who are dedicated to safeguarding public safety. He urged the community to seek out verified information as investigations continue, acknowledging the rapid spread of misinformation during distressing times.

This incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for all drivers to adhere strictly to traffic instructions, especially in challenging weather conditions. Trust in the investigation process will be vital as authorities work to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies.
