Aaron Rai clinched the Wyndham Championship in a dramatic finish as Max Greyserman faltered in the final stretch.
Greyserman started the day just one shot behind leader Matt Kuchar, following an impressive run during the second round where he almost shot 59. By the third quarter of Sunday’s round, he surged ahead thanks to three eagles throughout the day, including a remarkable putt from 91 yards to eagle the 13th hole.
As evening approached, with sunset about 75 minutes away, Greyserman held a four-shot lead at Sedgefield Country Club, poised to finish strong after an exhausting day that began for him at 9:40 a.m. Nevertheless, everything changed on the 14th hole. After a lengthy wait to tee off and taking a powerful drive, Greyserman’s shot veered out of bounds, leading to a quadruple bogey.
Despite recovering with a birdie on the 15th to regain a share of the lead, Greyserman struggled once again on the 16th, where he four-putted for a double bogey. This opened the door for Rai, who had been quietly pursuing the leader.
On the 72nd hole, now playing in darkness, Rai struck an impressive iron shot from 200 yards, landing it just seven feet from the hole. He converted the putt to seal the victory, marking his first win on the PGA Tour.
Rai’s win won’t be officially recorded until Monday morning, as Kuchar, who was one over for the round, did not finish his last hole and will complete it tomorrow, being the only player to remain on the course.
Greyserman’s unfortunate turn of events began after his eagle on the 13th. Following a long wait on the 14th tee, his frustration grew as his initial drive was lost. Attempts to recover only worsened as he battled through bunker trouble and missed crucial putts.
Ultimately, Greyserman went from a commanding lead to a tie, and then fell behind as Rai took control. Despite rallying briefly, Greyserman could not recover his earlier momentum, allowing Rai to emerge victorious as darkness enveloped the course.
