Hiccup and Toothless are making their live-action debut.
Universal Studios has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming live-action film adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon,” a beloved franchise that originated with the successful DreamWorks Animation trilogy in the 2010s. The highly anticipated movie is set to premiere in theaters on June 13.
The live-action adaptation features familiar characters portrayed by a fresh cast. Mason Thames, known for his role in “The Black Phone,” takes on the role of Hiccup, while Nico Parker, recognized for her performances in “Dumbo” and “The Last of Us,” plays Astrid. Julian Dennison, emerging from “Deadpool 2,” steps into the shoes of Fishlegs Ingerman. Returning to the franchise, Gerard Butler reprises his role as Hiccup’s father, Stoick the Vast, after voicing the character in the animated series.
The newly released trailer showcases Hiccup, Stoick, and Toothless, who strikingly resemble their animated versions. As part of his Viking training, Hiccup is ordered to slay a dragon but ultimately forms a bond with the charming dragon, Toothless.
Dean DeBlois, who was at the helm for all three animated films, reprises his role as the writer and director for the live-action adaptation. The previous DreamWorks movies include the original “How to Train Your Dragon” released in 2010, its sequel in 2014, and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” in 2019. The narrative, inspired by Cressida Cowell’s book series, follows a young Viking named Hiccup who discovers and befriends a captured dragon, leading to a meaningful bond. Set on the Isle of Berk, the series has expanded beyond movies to include three TV shows, theme park attractions, and a live performance known as “How to Train Your Dragon on Ice.” The franchise has garnered over $1.6 billion in revenue worldwide.
The anticipation around this film marks an exciting new chapter in the story of Hiccup and Toothless, proving that timeless tales can be reimagined for new generations.
For those who loved the original trilogy, this live-action version promises to capture the heart of the story while providing a fresh visual experience that fans can look forward to.
