Rescue teams are currently engaged in a mission to save dozens of individuals trapped in a gondola at Gore Mountain, a popular ski resort located in Upstate New York. Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed that 67 guests found themselves stuck in enclosed cabins on the gondola late Wednesday morning as she addressed the situation during an unrelated news conference focused on a new childcare initiative.

“This is a situation we’re taking very seriously,” Hochul said, emphasizing the urgency of the rescue operation.

The Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), which oversees Gore Mountain, reported that a “non-emergency” mechanical failure caused the Northwoods gondola to halt operations. Emergency responders were alerted to the scene around 10:35 a.m., with rescue efforts reportedly ongoing by noon.

Governor Hochul reassured the public that ORDA and the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) teams are well-equipped to handle such rescues. “First of all, they’re enclosed, which is important because it’s very cold,” she remarked, adding that the individuals trapped were appropriately dressed in their ski gear.

According to ORDA, 67 guests were inside approximately 20 cabins at the time of the incident. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries. Hochul acknowledged the complexity of the rescue operation, noting that the rescuers are navigating a challenging environment, high above the ground, while also managing the concern and anxiety of those trapped.

“This is dangerous work,” she stated. “To get them brought safely to ground takes real skill and experience.”

As this situation develops, further information will be provided. The community remains hopeful for the safe retrieval of all those affected.
