Dunkin’ is experiencing a notable shortage of doughnuts at its locations in Nebraska, New Mexico, and some other states, leaving many customers dismayed. This unexpected “doughnut drought” has been attributed to a manufacturing error affecting supplies from a specific supplier. As a result, Dunkin’ stores in Omaha, Lincoln, and Grand Island were devoid of their signature pastries last Thursday and Friday, prompting signs to be placed on doors and drive-thru kiosks to inform customers of the situation.
While some locations offered “Munchkins,” or doughnut holes, the absence of doughnuts left patrons like Omaha resident Tyler Raikar expressing disappointment. She had stopped by for a chocolate cake doughnut but found none available, stating, “What? No doughnuts! That’s tragic!” Despite her letdown, she relayed that her morning was still fine since she was mainly there for coffee.
Store employees have indicated that the shortage could stem from wider supply chain issues, with delivery trucks arriving without their intended cargo. A manager from a west Omaha location cited that the shortage is part of a national issue but couldn’t provide additional details, adhering to corporate directives. In contrast, checks of Dunkin’ locations in other regions, like St. Joseph, Missouri, and Boston—where the chain has a strong following—revealed no similar shortages.
Dunkin’, now under the ownership of Inspire Brands since a billion-dollar acquisition in 2020, has over 13,200 restaurants worldwide. A representative from Inspire acknowledged the issue originated from a single supplier, affecting about 4 percent of Dunkin’s U.S. stores, though efforts are already underway to replenish stocks in the affected areas.
The company, which famously rebranded from Dunkin’ Donuts in 2018 to emphasize its coffee offerings, faces this temporary setback as they strive to maintain their reputation as a leading coffee and doughnut brand. The outlook for returning to normal supplies is hopeful, as business owners like Bryce Bares are optimistic that the issue will soon be resolved, allowing customers to enjoy their favorite treats in the near future.
