Doug Emhoff, the first second gentleman of the United States, made a heartfelt address to delegates and the nation at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, expressing admiration for his wife, Vice President Kamala Harris. He emphasized her commitment to their family and illustrated how that same dedication would inform her leadership as president.
“Kamala rises to the occasion wherever and however she’s needed,” Emhoff stated. “Now that the country needs her, she is showing you what we already know: she’s ready to lead.”
Reflecting on his background from childhood in New Jersey and California to his career as an entertainment lawyer and his meeting with Harris in 2013, Emhoff shared a personal anecdote about his first call to her. He humorously recounted leaving her a voicemail in a nervous state, which Harris has kept and plays for him on each anniversary.
The couple is set to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary on the same night that Harris will deliver the keynote address to accept the Democratic presidential nomination.
“As I got to know her better and fell in love quickly, I discovered the passion that drives Kamala. This has been evident over the past four years and particularly in recent weeks,” he remarked, highlighting her pursuit of justice and her stance against bullying. “She takes joy in seeing others succeed but cannot stand it when they are treated unfairly.”
Emhoff praised Harris for her stance against antisemitism and all forms of hatred, calling her “a joyful warrior.” He described her leadership style as one infused with joy, compassion, and conviction.
“She will lead with joy and toughness, guided by the belief that we are strongest when we fight for our ideals rather than simply against our fears,” he added.
In 2020, as Harris broke historical barriers by becoming the first female vice president, Emhoff also made history as the first second gentleman, as well as the first Jewish spouse of a vice president or president. He has actively promoted his Jewish identity and has focused on combating antisemitism.
“She’s the one who encouraged me as second gentleman to take up that fight, which is personal to me,” Emhoff noted.
He concluded with a strong affirmation of Harris’s suitability for the presidency at this pivotal moment in the nation’s history. “She is exactly the right president,” Emhoff declared.
