Two Jiokapeci Canoes Spark 1-2 Finish Mystery in Suva Kabara Race

Double Finish Mystery in Suva’s Kabara Canoe Race

On July 10, 1964, The Fiji Times highlighted an exciting event in Suva with the Kabara canoe race, where a unique situation occurred as a canoe named Jiokapeci secured both first and second places. The mix-up was attributed to two of the four participating canoes being identically named, leading to some confusion among the spectators.

The race attracted hundreds of enthusiastic onlookers who gathered along the wharves and waterfront. It began and ended at the central reclamation jetty, filled with anticipation. However, the action quickly diverged into two distinct competitions during the initial stretch. The smaller canoes, Railala and Sanita, faced challenges with the weak winds, compelling their crews to labor intensely on their sails to harness any available breeze.

As the race progressed towards the buoy for the turn, Sanita lagged significantly behind in third place, with Railala also trailing. Both canoes struggled on the return leg, particularly Sanita, which found its size and weight detrimental to its performance in the light wind conditions. Ultimately, Jone Mate and Apaitia Seru skillfully steered Jiokapeci to victory, narrowly edging out their rivals. Jone expressed a deep sense of personal achievement, especially since he had previously faced disappointment when another canoe he sailed in had capsized in rough seas.

Railala managed to secure third place without much challenge from Sanita, and the day also featured vibrant celebrations centered around youth at Albert Park. Members of the Methodist Church displayed their athletic prowess in various sports, including rugby, hockey, and athletics, all under splendid weather.

The festivities kicked off with a grand youth march at Albert Park, accompanied by a traditional meke of welcome. By 10:45 AM, the Scripture Union display was inaugurated, and soon after, the sports events commenced, running throughout the day. The evening concluded with a band concert and performances by the Youth Combined Choir, culminating in a choir competition that celebrated community spirit and engagement.

Such events not only emphasize the richness of Fijian culture but also reinforce community connections and spotlight the talents and enthusiasm of the youth, instilling a hopeful outlook for the future.
