DOT Launches Golden Age of Travel Civility Campaign to Reignite Calm in the Skies

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has initiated a fresh campaign aimed at fostering civility in air travel amidst a troubling trend of unruly passenger behavior. Since 2021, there have been a staggering 13,800 reports of disturbances in the skies, indicative of a 400% surge in in-flight incidents compared to 2019. Furthermore, one in five flight attendants faced physical incidents last year, underscoring the urgent need for change.

The campaign, entitled “The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You,” seeks to spark a nationwide dialogue on restoring courtesy and dignity to air travel. In their announcement, the DOT stated, “There’s no question we’ve lost sight of what makes travel fun – the excitement, the relaxation, the cordial conversations.” They emphasize that as Americans face increasing division and stress, returning to fundamental values such as civility and kindness can create a greater sense of connection within the country.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has outlined several reflective questions for travelers to consider before their flights. These include acts of kindness like helping pregnant passengers or the elderly with their bags, demonstrating respectful attire, managing children effectively in the airport, and expressing gratitude toward flight attendants.

The DOT’s campaign resonates with a strong desire among passengers for improved behavior on flights, while also urging airlines to contribute to a more positive travel environment. As air travel resumes its significance in everyday life, these efforts aim to reinvigorate the experience, making it more enjoyable for everyone involved.
