This weekend offers skywatchers in the U.S. a final opportunity to witness a supermoon this year. The full moon in November, referred to as the Beaver Moon, is set to shine larger and brighter than usual, with NASA indicating that it will rise at 4:29 PM ET on Friday. This marks the fourth consecutive supermoon observed since August.

The visible times for the moon’s rise and set will vary based on location, according to Christopher Palma, a teaching professor in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State University. For example, in Central Pennsylvania, the Beaver Moon will be visible from its rise at 4:29 PM on Nov. 15 until it sets the following morning at 8:04 AM.

A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon being at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, resulting in a larger and brighter appearance. While the term is not officially recognized by astronomical bodies, supermoons can lead to higher than average tides and typically happen three to four times a year in succession.

The Beaver Moon will appear full for nearly three days, with the best viewing times extending from Thursday morning through sunrise on Sunday morning. No special equipment is needed to enjoy the spectacle, though clear weather will enhance visibility. Palma encourages everyone to observe the moon at its fullest and mentions that users can reference a moon map to identify features on its surface, such as the prominent crater Tycho, visible as a bright spot in the moon’s lower hemisphere.

Skygazers should take note: if you miss this supermoon, the next opportunity won’t come until October 2025, when there will be a series of three supermoons.

In summary, this rare celestial event is a splendid chance for individuals to connect with nature and indulge in the wonders of the night sky, fostering a sense of awe and appreciation for our universe.
