Don’t Miss the Final Supermoon of 2024: What You Need to Know!

The final supermoon of 2024, known as the Beaver Moon, will reach its peak illumination on Friday, November 15. However, for the best viewing experience in North America, enthusiasts should wait until it rises in the east on Saturday, November 16, shortly after sunset.

Traditionally named the Beaver Moon due to the time beavers are active in building their winter lodges, November’s full moon is also referred to as the Frost Moon or Snow Moon, reflecting the onset of colder weather across the continent. In Native American traditions, it is recognized as the “Freezing Moon” by the Anishinaabeg people, showcasing cultural connections to natural phenomena.

This Beaver Moon marks the conclusion of four supermoons witnessed throughout the year, succeeding August’s Sturgeon Moon, September’s Harvest Moon, and October’s Hunter’s Moon. A supermoon occurs when the full moon is within 90% of its perigee, which is its closest point to Earth due to its elliptical orbit.

While the moon will be at its fullest at 4:28 p.m. EST on November 15, the optimal viewing time will be during its rise on November 16, about 20 to 30 minutes post-sunset. Observers can look for the sparkling Pleiades star cluster, commonly known as the “Seven Sisters,” positioned near the moon during this period; it will shift from the lower left on November 15 to the upper right on November 16.

Viewing this celestial event doesn’t require any special equipment, though binoculars or telescopes can enhance the experience, revealing intricate details of the lunar surface. Watching the supermoon rise can be particularly breathtaking as it casts a luminous glow across the sky.

Looking ahead, the year will close with the final full moon of 2024, the Cold Moon, which is set to rise on December 15.

This celestial wonder not only captivates the imagination of stargazers but also serves as a reminder of the cycles of nature, encouraging us to reflect on the changing seasons and the beauty of the universe above.
