Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, the iconic vocalist who infused the Grateful Dead with her powerful voice from 1971 to 1979, has passed away at the age of 76 after a courageous battle with cancer. She died on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at Alive Hospice in Nashville, surrounded by her loving family.
In an official statement, her family shared, “Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, former vocalist with the Grateful Dead, passed away surrounded by her family on November 2, 2025, at Alive Hospice in Nashville after a lengthy struggle with cancer.” She is survived by her husband David MacKay, her two sons, Kinsman and Zion Godchaux, and grandchildren, as well as her siblings Gogi Clark and Ivan Thatcher.
Born in Florence, Alabama, Donna Jean began her music career as a session singer in Muscle Shoals, contributing to classic hits such as Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” and Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds.” Following her move to California, she met her first husband, pianist Keith Godchaux, and subsequently formed a bond with Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Donna Jean and Keith joined the band, embarking on an incredible journey that took them across America, Europe, and even Egypt during their time with the Grateful Dead.
After the tragic loss of Keith in a car accident, Donna Jean remarried in 1981 to David MacKay, returning to her musical roots in Muscle Shoals. The couple collaborated in the music scene as part of the Donna Jean Godchaux Band, showcasing her enduring passion for music.
Remembered for her sweet spirit and vibrant energy, Donna Jean leaves behind a legacy that resonates with those who were touched by her artistry.
