Dominion Brothers bank on under-21s for Sigatoka qualifier as senior stars sit out

The absence of key players from the Dominion Brothers rugby team, who are away on national duty, has prompted the under-21 squad to step up for the Super 7s Qualifier in Sigatoka this Saturday. Notable team members like Sakiusa Siqila, Filipo Bukayaro, and Josese Batirerega are unavailable as they represent the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s teams, with Siqila and Bukayaro participating in an event in Cape Town, while Batirerega is in Korea.

Despite these challenges, head coach Rokolua Manuaba expressed confidence in the younger players’ abilities to perform in their absence. “Many of our under-21 players have been gaining exposure on the field in major rugby tournaments and have been performing well,” Manuaba stated. He acknowledges the important role that these junior players will play in securing a place in next month’s McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s tournament.

The Dominion Brothers have been placed in Pool D alongside Covenant Rugby, Ravuka Sharks, and Yalova Spearhead. Manuaba mentioned that the familiarity of competing against these teams in previous tournaments, like the Fiji Bitter 7s series, could give them an edge. However, he emphasized the need for his squad to adapt their strategies to gain an advantage over their pool opponents.

The one-day qualifier competition will be held at Lawaqa Park, adding anticipation for the team’s performance as they aim to showcase their potential and secure a place in the upcoming Coral Coast 7s. The transition period for the Dominion Brothers may be challenging, but it also provides an opportunity for young talent to shine on a larger stage, and with the right mindset, they could make a significant impact.
