The Miami Dolphins have officially placed veteran tight end Darren Waller on injured reserve following a pectoral injury he sustained during the team’s recent game against the Cleveland Browns. Waller was hurt in the first half of the Dolphins’ 31-6 loss on Sunday and was unable to return to the field. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel shared on Monday that Waller is dealing with a soft tissue injury and remains cautiously optimistic about his recovery.
“It’s a situation that probably it would be living in hope to see him in the upcoming next weeks’ games, but he’ll be diligent,” McDaniel commented, emphasizing Waller’s dedication to his recovery process. Waller has had a considerable impact this season, contributing 10 catches for 117 yards and four touchdowns over the first four games. Unfortunately, he is set to miss at least four games and will be eligible to return in week 13 against the New Orleans Saints, right after Miami’s bye week in week 12.
Waller’s season has been marked by challenges, as he missed the first three games due to a hip strain but had made a strong comeback, particularly with star receiver Tyreek Hill sidelined for the season due to a knee injury. After a year-long break from the sport following his retirement in June 2024 with the New York Giants, Waller returned to football in July, albeit starting his stint with Miami while managing his hip injury. His performance in week 4 against the New York Jets, where he scored two touchdowns, marked a bright spot in his return to the NFL after nearly two years.
In response to Waller’s injury, the Dolphins have bolstered their tight end options by signing Greg Dulcich to the active roster from the practice squad and adding Chris Myarick to the practice squad. Dulcich has a solid background, having recorded 41 receptions for 464 yards and two touchdowns across three seasons with the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants.
While Waller’s absence is a setback for the Dolphins, this may provide an opportunity for other players to step up and showcase their talents, demonstrating the team’s depth and resilience as they navigate through the challenges of the season.
