The Miami Dolphins are bringing in backup quarterback Tyler Huntley from the Ravens’ practice squad as Tua Tagovailoa is sidelined due to his third diagnosed concussion in his professional career. Coach Mike McDaniel confirmed this signing, initially reported by NFL Network, emphasizing that Huntley is being added for depth behind Skylar Thompson, the current backup quarterback.

Tagovailoa is currently in the NFL’s concussion protocol after leaving the game against Buffalo last Thursday, which ended in a 31-10 loss for Miami. McDaniel stated that there isn’t enough information yet to determine if Tagovailoa will be placed on injured reserve. “That’s gonna be driven by medical experts,” McDaniel mentioned, adding that discussions with Tagovailoa and general manager Chris Grier will follow once they have the necessary information.

In the recent game, Tagovailoa exited after suffering a concussion during the third quarter when he collided with Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin. After the incident, players from both teams signaled for help, and Tagovailoa showed signs associated with a traumatic brain injury while on the field. He managed to get up and walk to the sideline after a few minutes.

Thompson took over for Tagovailoa in the game, and the next day McDaniel indicated plans to sign an additional quarterback. He refrained from speculating on the implications of the latest concussion for Tagovailoa’s future, who had previously suffered two concussions in 2022 and another during his time in college at Alabama. McDaniel has expressed his desire to allow Tagovailoa to make his own decisions about his career, amid reports that he has no intention of retiring. Tagovailoa is currently seeking advice from neurologists.

Thompson is expected to start when the Dolphins face Seattle on Sunday, and McDaniel clarified that adding Huntley does not reflect a lack of confidence in Thompson. Huntley offers a valuable alternative given his experience.

Huntley, who went undrafted in 2020 before joining the Ravens, has stepped in for an injured Lamar Jackson in 2021 and 2022, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2022. He has a record of 3-7 in 10 starts, with 1,957 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions, along with a 64.6 completion rate. McDaniel acknowledged Huntley’s capability, noting that his familiarity with the team and past performances suggest he could lead effectively.

Despite Thompson’s struggles during his time filling in for Tagovailoa, McDaniel remains confident in Thompson’s potential to secure wins, highlighting his development since getting starting opportunities in the NFL. Thompson’s ability to command the team and demonstrate growth has impressed his teammates, according to McDaniel.
