Miami Dolphins wide receiver Grant DuBose is currently hospitalized and in stable condition following a significant head injury sustained during Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. The 23-year-old player will remain in Houston for further evaluation rather than traveling back to South Florida with the team.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel reported that there has been “positive feedback” regarding DuBose’s condition after he underwent imaging for head and neck injuries. DuBose was injured in the third quarter after a hit to the helmet from Texans safety Calen Bullock while attempting a pass from Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Medical personnel attended to DuBose on the field for about 11 minutes before he was taken away on a stretcher.
During the incident, many players, including his teammates and Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, expressed their concern and support. “When you see a guy down on the field like that, it’s very hard to see. We’re just praying that all is well with him and that he recovers as quickly as possible,” said Ryans.
DuBose had just returned to play after being sidelined for several weeks due to a shoulder injury. Bullock received a penalty for unnecessary roughness for hitting DuBose, who was deemed a defenseless receiver. He expressed remorse regarding the play, stating, “I wasn’t trying to go out there and hurt nobody.”
Tua Tagovailoa, who has faced his own injuries in the past, shared his feelings about the situation after the game. “I’m my toughest critic when it comes to ball placement… I just feel bad that I even put him in that situation to have gotten hit,” he remarked.
Teammate Tyreek Hill confirmed that DuBose was in “good spirits” in the hospital, noting that he was moving, which was a relief for the team. “It was scary… people don’t understand the sacrifice that we have to make to play this game,” he said, reflecting on the physical risks of football.
Despite the distressing incident, the Dolphins managed to score their first touchdown after play resumed in their 20-12 loss, leaving them with a record of 6-8. Coach McDaniel emphasized the importance of moving forward, stating, “I got a lot of people counting on me to make sound decisions… it’s not hard for me to recognize how many people are depending on me to do my job.”
Additionally, Dolphins receiver Jaylen Waddle left the game with a knee injury, and further updates on his condition are expected on Monday.
