Dolphins Navigate QB Chaos: Huntley Steps In Amid Tagovailoa’s Uncertainty

The Miami Dolphins are preparing for the likely extended absence of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who suffered his fourth diagnosed concussion last week. In response, the team is signing former Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley from the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad, as reported by NFL Network.

Skylar Thompson is expected to start in this Sunday’s away game against the Seattle Seahawks, but Huntley could work his way into the lineup according to the report.

The uncertainty surrounding Tagovailoa’s return this season looms large, especially after he faced his third concussion during a game against the Buffalo Bills. While some have suggested he consider retirement, Tagovailoa reportedly has no intention of doing so and has begun consulting specialists about his future.

In the meantime, the Dolphins will look to stay competitive while Thompson takes the reins, with Huntley poised to step in if necessary. Miami also has Tim Boyle, a former Jets quarterback, on their practice squad, but he is not seen as a viable option.

Huntley, 26, has appeared in 20 career games with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions but demonstrated his capability to manage an offense during his time with the Baltimore Ravens. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2022 after playing in six games, four of which were as a starter.

Huntley’s dual-threat ability sets him apart from Tagovailoa, a traditional pocket passer. The Dolphins have designed their offense around their star receivers and coach Mike McDaniel’s running strategies, which might shift with Huntley at the helm.

Thompson, a seventh-round pick in 2022, has played in eight games and has thrown just one touchdown. The Dolphins felt confident enough in his abilities to part ways with former Jet Mike White this offseason.

As the Dolphins prepare to face the Seahawks, they are currently 1-1 and are 6.5-point underdogs, according to FanDuel. Coach McDaniel expressed confidence in Thompson’s performance during training camp, noting his strong technique and decision-making skills.
