The Miami Dolphins are on the verge of a coaching change, plucking Nathaniel Hackett to take on the role of quarterbacks coach under new head coach Jeff Hafley. This decision comes as the team bids farewell to Darrell Bevell, who served in the same position during Mike McDaniel’s four-year tenure.
Hackett, 46, brings a wealth of experience, including a stint as head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2022 where he faced challenges, ultimately finishing the season with a 4-11 record before being replaced. His previous tenure as the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers from 2019 to 2021, where he helped lead the team to three consecutive 13-win seasons and two NFC Championship appearances, significantly boosted his coaching stock.
Following his time in Denver, Hackett spent time as the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, reuniting with renowned quarterback Aaron Rodgers. His connection to Hafley stems from their previous collaboration in Green Bay when Hafley served as the Packers’ defensive coordinator.
Additionally, Hackett has experience as the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Buffalo Bills, highlighting his ability to develop quarterbacks. During his time in Jacksonville, he played a crucial role in guiding Blake Bortles to lead the Jaguars to the AFC Championship Game in 2017.
In Miami, Hackett will work alongside Hafley and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, implementing the Shanahan offensive system. As the Dolphins evaluate their quarterback situation, including the potential release of Tua Tagovailoa this offseason, Hackett may play a pivotal role in determining the future of the team’s quarterback depth chart, signaling a period of transition and potential growth for the franchise.
