The Miami Dolphins and veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. have mutually agreed to part ways, as announced by the team on Friday. Beckham, who signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins back in May, struggled to make an impact on the field, recording only nine catches on 18 targets for a total of 55 yards across nine games.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel commented on the decision, saying, “It’s as simple as, what’s the best for both him and the team moving forward. We thought it was a good time to go that direction.” He emphasized the importance of open communication, acknowledging Beckham’s expectations while deeming the separation beneficial for both parties.
Beckham’s last game with the Dolphins came on Sunday against the New York Jets, where he managed to log just one catch for one yard. Following this decision, Beckham will be placed on waivers until Monday and will become a free agent if he is not picked up by another team.
After signing with Miami, Beckham began the 2024 season on the physically unable to perform list, delaying his debut until Week 5. He previously played 14 games with the Baltimore Ravens last season, after recovering from a torn ACL sustained during Super Bowl LVI in which his Los Angeles Rams triumphed over the Cincinnati Bengals.
This decision opens up new opportunities for both Beckham and the Dolphins as they aim to realign their strategies going forward. Beckham’s experience and talent will likely attract interest from other teams as he seeks to rejuvenate his career. Meanwhile, the Dolphins have the chance to explore different options in their offensive roster.
