Jelena Dokic has proposed that Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis consider forming a permanent doubles partnership, particularly as they gear up for the upcoming Australian Open. The duo, famously known as the ‘Special Ks,’ has faced significant challenges with injuries over the past few years, leading to limited participation in singles competitions.

Despite these setbacks, both players have shown impressive form in doubles, notably clinching the Australian Open doubles title in 2022. Unfortunately, due to ongoing injuries, they have teamed up only sporadically in recent times.

During an appearance on Channel Nine, Dokic expressed her desire to see Kyrgios and Kokkinakis dedicate themselves to doubles, particularly if their singles careers continue to be hampered by injuries. She emphasized that participating more in doubles could not only rejuvenate their careers but also increase the visibility and excitement around doubles tennis, an area often overshadowed by singles matches. “I think we would all love to see them play singles, and I think they would too,” Dokic remarked. However, she added that if singles is not feasible, they should wholeheartedly pursue a doubles career.

Kyrgios has decided to withdraw from the singles competition at this year’s Australian Open, while Kokkinakis also pulled out after re-injuring his shoulder during the Adelaide International. Nonetheless, both players will be competing together in the doubles event, having recently paired up at the Brisbane International.

In their first match of the tournament, the wildcard duo will face fellow Australians Marc Polmans and Jason Kubler, indicating the level of enthusiasm surrounding the Special Ks. The upcoming match at Kia Arena promises an electric atmosphere, as Kyrgios is known for rallying crowd support. Kubler himself recognized the unique appeal of the pair, acknowledging that they represent one of the most popular doubles teams in Australia.

As they prepare for their doubles campaign at the Australian Open, fans are hopeful that Kyrgios and Kokkinakis can capture the magic they once had and potentially add another title to their names. The journey ahead is filled with promise, as their collaboration in doubles could spark renewed interest and excitement around this format of the sport.
