The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has initiated an investigation into EPIC City, a proposed Muslim-centric development in Collin County, Texas. This decision follows a request from Senator John Cornyn, who expressed concerns about the project, which is set to encompass over 1,000 homes, a school, retail spaces, parks, and a mosque on more than 400 acres of land.
The proposed development has faced opposition from various state officials, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott. In April, Abbott mentioned that multiple state agencies were looking into “potential illegal activities” involving EPIC and its associates. Additionally, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sought records from Plano ISD in relation to the investigation.
Senator Cornyn voiced his gratitude towards Attorney General Bondi and the DOJ upon the announcement of the investigation, stating his concern over religious discrimination and asserting that any violations of federal law should be addressed promptly.
In contrast, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) criticized Cornyn’s request, describing it as unfounded and rooted in Islamophobic sentiments aimed at discrediting a community-focused project. CAIR’s Government Affairs Director, Robert S. McCaw, urged the DOJ to redirect its focus toward state officials who may be violating the Constitution by unfairly targeting Muslims.
Community Capital Partners, the organization behind EPIC City, expressed disappointment that their development has become a subject of political contention, while they continue to engage with local leaders for input on their plans.
