Afghanistan and Pakistan are preparing to engage in peace negotiations in Doha this Saturday, following the extension of a ceasefire after a week that witnessed severe border clashes. The ongoing violence has led to multiple casualties, marking recent conflicts as some of the most intense since the Taliban regained control in Afghanistan in 2021.
On Friday, the two countries agreed to extend a previously established 48-hour ceasefire to facilitate crucial discussions aimed at addressing the recent surge in violence, which has resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries. Afghanistan’s government spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, confirmed that a delegation from Kabul, led by Defence Minister Mullah Muhammad Yaqoob, has arrived in Doha for the talks. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif will represent his country during this critical dialogue.
The negotiations will focus on urgent security concerns, particularly the issue of cross-border terrorism that Pakistan has alleged is stemming from Afghan territories. The Pakistani foreign office has asserted the necessity for Afghan authorities to take decisive action against militant groups they claim operate from within Afghanistan. However, the Taliban government has repeatedly denied these claims, attributing the tensions to misinformation propagated by the Pakistani military.
The recent escalation of hostilities followed Pakistan’s demands for Afghanistan to control these militants after a series of attacks within its borders, which Pakistani officials assert originated from Afghan safe havens.
