Dodgers World Series Opener Shifts as Key Reliever Out with Personal Matter

The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to face the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night at the Rogers Centre, but a key player will be noticeably absent. The team announced on Thursday that left-handed reliever Alex Vesia will not participate due to a “deeply personal family matter.” Consequently, he was omitted from the Dodgers’ World Series roster released on Friday morning.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that the expectations are low regarding Vesia’s return for any part of the championship series. He stated, “That’s probably the most likely — unless something unforeseen happens — that’s what we’re anticipating.” Furthermore, when asked if the team considered placing Vesia on the Family Medical Emergency List, Roberts explained that they explored different options but ultimately decided against it, recognizing that the player’s focus should be on his family during this challenging time.

President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman supported this decision, emphasizing the importance of not imposing any pressure on Vesia amidst his personal situation. “This is so much bigger than baseball, and for us, it was doing whatever small part we could to just, 100 percent be supportive,” Friedman remarked.

The Dodgers will adjust their roster without Vesia and fellow lefty Tanner Scott, instead opting for right-handed relievers Edgardo Henriquez and Will Klein. Despite the absence of Vesia, Roberts expressed confidence in the remaining bullpen options, stating, “We have a lot of viable options… I trust all the guys, I really do. And guys are gonna have to step up, but Alex is certainly gonna be missed.”

The Dodgers’ official statement regarding Vesia conveyed their heartfelt support: “It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter. The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.”

Vesia has proven to be a crucial component of the Dodgers’ bullpen throughout the 2025 season, showcasing consistent performance despite the team’s struggles. He made significant contributions during the postseason, including six consecutive scoreless innings in October.

While the Dodgers prepare for the World Series, the focus remains on supporting Vesia during this time of difficulty, underscoring the human element of sports amidst the competitive landscape.
