The Los Angeles Dodgers made a notable roster change on Friday, promoting speedy outfielder Justin Dean from Triple-A Oklahoma City while sending Esteury Ruiz back to the minors. This move underscores the Dodgers’ strategy of bolstering their outfield depth with players who can bring agility and speed to the lineup.
Dean, who is 28 years old, is making his debut in the majors after being drafted by the Braves in the 17th round in 2018. He joined the Dodgers on a minor league contract in December and participated in spring training as a non-roster invitee, showcasing his talent after spending seven seasons in Atlanta’s system.
During the current season, Dean has mainly taken on the role of a center fielder, starting 57 games in the position, while also contributing in right and left fields. His performance at Triple-A has been impressive, boasting a batting average of .274 with a .370 on-base percentage and .426 slugging percentage. He has accumulated 11 doubles, six triples, six home runs, and has an impressive 25 stolen bases in 32 attempts, with a particularly outstanding stretch of 14 steals in his last 27 games without being caught.
In contrast, Ruiz had been with the Dodgers since July, called up following an injury to Max Muncy. Over 28 games, Ruiz participated in 17 games but struggled to make a significant impact at the plate, recording only four hits in 21 at-bats, leading to a .190 batting average. His role primarily involved late-inning defensive substitutions without much offensive contribution, as evidenced by his limited starts.
To accommodate Dean, the Dodgers also designated first baseman Luken Baker for assignment, having claimed him off waivers from St. Louis earlier this week. This decision reflects the team’s proactive approach in maximizing their roster’s performance as they make strategic adjustments.
This roster reshuffle highlights the Dodgers’ commitment to enhancing their game with fresh talent, always looking to capitalize on opportunities for improvement as the season progresses.
