Dodgers Face Tough Decisions as Phillips Undergoes Surgery and Betts’ Status Uncertain

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Evan Phillips is set to undergo Tommy John surgery, a procedure scheduled for Wednesday. This surgery will sideline him for the remainder of the current season and a significant part of the 2026 season, according to manager Dave Roberts. Phillips, who has struggled with injury issues, was placed on the injured list due to right forearm discomfort on May 7 and was moved to the 60-day injured list just recently. He had previously missed the first segment of the season while recovering from a right rotator cuff strain he sustained during last postseason.

During the limited appearances this season, Phillips pitched effectively in seven games, delivering 5⅔ scoreless innings with six strikeouts and two walks, along with one save. He is signed for $6.1 million this year and is projected to have one more year of salary arbitration eligibility, presenting an interesting decision for the Dodgers this offseason.

In separate news, star outfielder Mookie Betts is not in the starting lineup against the Yankees due to a stubbed toe sustained on Wednesday night. While the team is conducting X-rays, Roberts has indicated that he views Betts’ situation as day-to-day, although the pain has been significant enough to keep him out of the game. Miguel Rojas is stepping in at shortstop in Betts’ absence.

This news brings both concern and hope for the Dodgers. The team will need to find ways to cope with Phillips’ absence on the mound, but it also emphasizes the importance of player health management. Furthermore, the team has seen other players step up in challenging situations, which could foster resilience as they navigate through the season.
