Doctor of Late Actor Matthew Perry Pleads Guilty: What Happens Next?

Mark Chavez, the doctor of the late actor Matthew Perry, has pleaded guilty in connection with the investigation into Perry’s death, potentially facing up to 10 years in prison.

Chavez, 54, appeared before a federal judge in Los Angeles on October 2, where he formally admitted to conspiracy charges related to the distribution of the anesthetic ketamine. He was one of two doctors charged in relation to Perry’s death in October 2023.

While awaiting sentencing scheduled for April 2, 2025, Chavez remains free on a $50,000 bond. He has surrendered his passport and medical license and is prohibited from practicing medicine. During a previous court appearance on August 30, he agreed to a plea deal regarding the conspiracy charges.

Chavez’s attorney expressed that he feels a deep sense of remorse for the circumstances surrounding Perry’s death, acknowledging the impact on both the actor’s family and other patients. “He’s doing everything he can to make amends for this situation,” his lawyer stated.

Perry was found dead at the age of 54 at his Pacific Palisades home on October 28, 2023, with the initial indication of drowning later determined to be the result of “acute effects of ketamine.” He had been undergoing ketamine therapy for anxiety and depression, with his last treatment occurring about a week and a half before his death. Investigation revealed that the ketamine present in his system was not prescribed by a licensed physician.

Chavez has admitted to selling ketamine from his previous clinic to another doctor, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, and procuring more ketamine through false claims to a distributor and submitting fake prescriptions. Prosecutors noted Chavez was aware Plasencia lacked proper experience in administering ketamine.

Chavez is the third individual to plead guilty amid this investigation, following others involved, while two associates have pleaded not guilty.

Ketamine is known for its anesthetic and dissociative effects, leading to experiences of detachment and hallucinations. It can be misused for these sensations and has been associated with serious allegations, including sexual assault.
