A subcommittee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has suggested invalidating one of its vice-chair elections from February due to claims that the process did not properly support female candidates. If approved by the full DNC, this recommendation could prompt new elections for the positions currently held by Florida activist David Hogg and Pennsylvania state legislator Malcolm Kenyatta.
The challenge was brought forth by Kalyn Free, an Oklahoma Democratic Committeewoman who had run against Hogg and Kenyatta and expressed concerns that the combined ballot system used in the vice-chair election provided unfair advantages to the two men, thereby violating the party’s requirement for gender balance on its executive committee. Hogg and Kenyatta were the only male candidates left in the running, and Free argued that separate voting for each position could have led to different outcomes.
While Free’s challenge is not linked to ongoing tensions regarding Hogg’s advocacy for primary challenges against incumbent Democrats, it adds a layer of complexity to the current political climate within the DNC.
