December 2025 is poised to experience one of its coldest starts in two decades, reminiscent of winters past. As temperatures continue to drop this weekend, a significant weather system is set to bring accumulating snow to the Mid-Atlantic region.

The First Alert Weather Team has declared a WINTER ALERT from Saturday night through Sunday morning as a strong area of low pressure approaches the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV). Following a relatively mild Saturday with temperatures reaching the mid-40s to near 50 degrees, conditions are expected to change rapidly after sunset. A wintry mix may begin as precipitation moves in alongside falling temperatures.

Snow showers are predicted to develop along the I-95 corridor in the evening and are expected to linger into the early hours of Sunday. Most areas in the DC metro region can anticipate snowfall amounts between 1 to 3 inches. However, regions to the north and east of Washington, D.C. may see higher accumulations, while those to the south and west of the Beltway could experience less snowfall.

Following this winter precipitation, a surge of Arctic air will sweep into the area, leading to daytime temperatures struggling to stay above freezing on Sunday and into Monday. By Monday morning, air temperatures are expected to plummet to the teens, and wind chills may feel as cold as the single digits.

Fortunately, residents can look forward to a bit of relief by midweek, as sunshine is expected to return alongside warmer temperatures that are forecasted to align closer to seasonal averages. This upcoming weather pattern indicates a classic winter experience, providing opportunities for winter activities while reminding everyone to stay safe and warm during the harsh cold.
