As Fijians get ready for the auspicious Festival of Lights, Diwali, the National Fire Authority (NFA) is emphasizing the importance of celebrating safely and responsibly. NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane reminded citizens that Diwali should be a joyful occasion focused on togetherness rather than preventable tragedies.
In his message, Mr. Sowane urged families to remain vigilant, particularly when handling diyas, candles, cooking appliances, and fireworks. He stated, “Let us all work together to ensure that this Diwali is remembered for joy and unity, not preventable tragedies. Celebrate responsibly, stay alert, and call 910 immediately if an emergency arises. Happy Diwali to all Fijians!”
The NFA has recorded a significant number of fire incidents during Diwali over the years, many resulting from unattended cooking, open flames, and the mishandling of fireworks. This year, as in previous years, the authority is advocating for heightened awareness to avoid serious property damage, injuries, and loss of life.
“Fire safety begins at home,” Mr. Sowane emphasized, offering simple yet effective precautions. He advised placing diyas and candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces away from flammable materials, ensuring flames are extinguished before leaving home, and never leaving cooking unattended.
On the topic of fireworks, the NFA encourages purchasing only from licensed vendors and using them in open areas, away from homes, cars, and dry vegetation, reiterating the necessity of following safety instructions to prevent accidents.
The NFA also highlighted its ongoing commitment to educating the community on fire safety throughout the year, focusing on proactive measures to foster safe celebrations. As Mr. Sowane stated, “As we light our homes this Diwali, let us also keep safety at the heart of every celebration.”
As communities come together to celebrate, embracing safety will ensure that the festival remains a time of happiness, unity, and cherished memories, reinforcing the hope for a joyful and tragedy-free Diwali experience for all.
