As Fijians prepare to celebrate the joyous Festival of Lights, Diwali, the National Fire Authority (NFA) is issuing reminders to prioritize safety during the festivities. NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane emphasized that Diwali should be a time for celebration and unity, rather than a moment marked by preventable incidents.
In his public message, Mr. Sowane called upon families to exercise caution, especially while handling diyas, candles, cooking appliances, and fireworks. “Let us all work together to ensure that this Diwali is remembered for joy and unity, not preventable tragedies. Celebrate responsibly, stay alert, and call 910 immediately if an emergency arises. Happy Diwali to all Fijians!” he stated.
Historically, the NFA has noted a spike in fire incidents during Diwali, often attributed to unattended cooking, open flames, and the careless handling of fireworks. This year, as part of their ongoing efforts, the authority is urging citizens to remain vigilant to prevent any serious accidents, property damage, or loss of life.
“Fire safety begins at home,” Mr. Sowane stressed, providing straightforward yet effective safety measures. He advised placing diyas and candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces away from flammable materials, ensuring flames are extinguished before leaving the house, and never leaving cooking unattended.
Regarding fireworks, the NFA urged the public to buy only from licensed vendors and use them in open areas, far from homes, vehicles, and dry vegetation. They reiterated the importance of following safety guidelines to avoid mishaps.
The NFA also reaffirmed its commitment to community education on fire safety throughout the year, focusing on proactive strategies to ensure safe celebrations. Mr. Sowane concluded by encouraging all to keep safety in mind while lighting their homes this Diwali, reinforcing that prioritizing safety will enrich the collective experience of happiness and unity during the festival.
As communities come together for this vibrant celebration, a shared commitment to safety promises a Diwali filled with joy, unity, and lasting memories, reflecting the hope for a happy and tragedy-free event for all.
