Nadi Town is alive with excitement as residents prepare for the vibrant festivities of Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Shoppers are bustling through markets and streets, getting ready for one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year. Local business owners are reporting robust sales and increased foot traffic, indicating a festive spirit in the community.
Yogesh Kapadia, the Director of Infashion and Roopmilan, shared his optimistic view on the current Diwali season. He noted that sales are strong, and the general mood is positive. The overlap of Diwali with Fiji Day has provided an additional boost for retailers, enhancing the festive atmosphere. “Business is good, people are happy, and that’s it, it’s all good here,” he stated.
Arvind Raniga, owner of Raniga Jewellery, also observed that despite the rising gold prices, Diwali continues to be one of the busiest times of the year for his business. He mentioned that special pricing strategies would make purchases more appealing for customers during the festival. “As you know, the price of gold has really gone up, but we are going to give you a very special price on that day. I’m sure customers will be happy to receive it,” he said.
Nadi’s streets are adorned with color and festive decorations, creating a joyful setting as residents gear up for Diwali. The festival is not just a time for celebration; it also serves as a reminder of community spirit and cultural heritage. The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has encouraged local communities to take advantage of the discounts while being mindful of those less fortunate.
This year’s Diwali is particularly notable as it marks the 50th anniversary of the festival being recognized as a public holiday in Fiji, a change initiated by former Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara in 1974. The current Coalition Government has added to this legacy by declaring Girmit Day a public holiday, acknowledging the contributions of the Indian community to Fijian society.
As Nadi gears up for the festivities, the atmosphere is filled with hope and a sense of unity, reflecting the values of peace, prosperity, and goodwill that Diwali represents. The significant cultural event not only reinforces community bonds but also celebrates the multicultural fabric of Fiji, inviting all citizens to partake in the joyous occasion. Ultimately, Diwali serves as a beautiful reminder of the importance of togetherness and support within the diverse society of Fiji.
