Diwali Lights Up Nadi as Fiji Marks Holiday Milestone

Diwali Lights Up Nadi as Fiji Day Boosts Festive Shopping

Nadi Town is buzzing with energy as residents gear up for Diwali, the Festival of Lights, anticipated as one of the year’s most significant celebrations. The streets and markets are teeming with shoppers, and local business owners are reporting strong sales and increased foot traffic, showcasing a vibrant festive spirit in the community.

Yogesh Kapadia, Director of Infashion and Roopmilan, shared an optimistic perspective on this year’s Diwali season, noting a positive mood among consumers. The overlap of Diwali and Fiji Day has provided an additional boost for retailers, enhancing the overall festive atmosphere. “Business is good, people are happy, and that’s it, it’s all good here,” he remarked.

Arvind Raniga, the owner of Raniga Jewellery, also highlighted the bustling activity despite rising gold prices. He mentioned implementing special pricing strategies to make purchases more attractive for his customers during the festival. “As you know, the price of gold has really gone up, but we are going to give you a very special price on that day. I’m sure customers will be happy to receive it,” he said, showing a commitment to customer satisfaction during this meaningful occasion.

The streets of Nadi are beautifully adorned with colorful decorations, creating a joyful atmosphere as communities prepare for Diwali. Beyond being a time for celebration, Diwali serves as a reminder of community spirit and cultural heritage. The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has encouraged all local communities to make the most of the discounts available while also being considerate of those in need.

This year’s festivities hold special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of Diwali’s recognition as a public holiday in Fiji, a milestone initiated by former Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara in 1974. The current Coalition Government continues this legacy by declaring Girmit Day a public holiday, honoring the contributions of the Indian community to Fijian society.

As Nadi prepares for the upcoming festivities, the air is filled with hope and unity, embodying the values of peace, prosperity, and goodwill that Diwali represents. This vibrant cultural event not only strengthens community bonds but also celebrates Fiji’s multicultural essence, inviting all citizens to embrace the joyous occasion. Ultimately, Diwali serves as a beautiful reminder of the significance of togetherness and support within Fiji’s diverse society.
