Diwali Lights Up Fiji: Community Unity and Youth Values on Display

Excitement is building within Hindu communities as they prepare for Diwali, one of their most cherished festivals, which occurs next Tuesday. Last night, a vibrant Diwali Mela was held at the Gopal Sadhu Hanumaan Gadhi Mandir, attracting many attendees from the Suva–Nausori corridor.

The event saw a great turnout, and Committee President Ratnesh Bhawan expressed his joy at the community’s participation, emphasizing that Diwali serves to impart the values espoused by Lord Rama and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Bhawan noted that the festival encourages individuals to adhere to the path of righteousness, illuminate the world around them, and foster unity within the community.

He stressed the importance of teaching younger generations about both the joy of the occasion and the challenges many people face, stating, “The purpose of the Diwali fair is to show our children that there are a lot of people who are facing problems.” By highlighting the collective happiness that can be shared, the event aimed to cultivate an atmosphere of joy despite life’s difficulties.

Bhawan also pointed out that in times when young people confront various social challenges, engaging in religious festivities like Diwali is crucial for constructing a strong moral foundation. Participation allows youth to remain connected to their cultural roots and develop values that encourage positive life choices.

As celebrations of Diwali begin, there is a sense of community and unity that transcends individual differences. Fijians, recognizing the cultural significance of the festival, often come together to appreciate the shared traditions, demonstrating how diverse backgrounds can unite in celebration.

The essence of Diwali goes beyond lights and gatherings; it serves as a moment for introspection and recommitting to shared values of compassion and generosity. As families prepare to celebrate, they are reminded of the importance of safety during festivities, particularly with the use of fireworks and lights.

This Diwali, may the spirit of togetherness and shared values guide the community towards a brighter future, illuminating lives with joy and connection.
