The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), alongside the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, is gearing up for a meaningful Diwali celebration this year with an initiative aimed at promoting sustainability and responsible consumerism. This campaign emphasizes the importance of reducing waste, supporting fair trading practices, and encouraging ethical consumption during the festive season.
FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta highlighted that Diwali is not just a period of festivity but also a time for reflection and rejuvenation. She stressed that cultural celebrations can play a vital role in driving positive transformations for individuals and the environment. The FCCC plans to monitor the pricing of essential goods such as ghee, milk, and oil to ensure they’re fairly priced, warning traders against false claims regarding eco-friendliness, which must be substantiated with evidence.
The initiative encourages households and businesses to minimize the use of single-use plastics, conserve energy and water, and buy locally, thereby supporting ethical trading practices. Dhirendra Nand, the National President of the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha, emphasized the spiritual connection to environmental responsibility, urging Fijians to honor the festival by caring for nature.
In light of past concerns regarding unethical business practices during Diwali, both organizations call on the public to celebrate wisely, avoid waste, and choose to support honest vendors. This effort not only highlights the cultural significance of Diwali but also points towards a hopeful future where community festivities align with sustainable practices, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and responsible consumerism in Fiji. As communities come together in celebration, they can also contribute to nurturing the planet for future generations.
