Diwali Fireworks in Fiji: Oldest Shop Navigates Rules and Rising Costs

As Diwali approaches, Mahesh Syndicate, one of Fiji’s oldest firework retailers, is ready to brighten the festive season with an extensive selection of fireworks, despite facing increasing restrictions and economic challenges. Vinay Kumar, the General Manager, announced that this year the store offers over 50 different types of fireworks, including cakes, fountains, sparklers, and affordable options to cater to diverse budgets.

Kumar explained that due to recent restrictions, the company has had to adapt by expanding the variety within each permissible category of fireworks, ensuring customers have more choices. The complexity of importing fireworks has intensified in the post-COVID era, with stricter international regulations on items deemed dangerous goods leading to the phasing out of many popular fireworks, such as woodpeckers and rockets.

Even though Mahesh Syndicate has made strides to innovate while adhering to safety guidelines, Kumar noted that sales leading up to this year’s Diwali have been slower than anticipated. He attributed this slowdown to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, which is affecting consumer spending habits across the board. “People need to prioritize their expenditures on essentials like food and decorations before allocating funds for fireworks,” Kumar stated.

With Diwali set for next Tuesday, shoppers are expected to flock to the store over the weekend for final purchases. Mahesh Syndicate remains dedicated to providing high-quality and safer fireworks, investing in better packaging and careful product selection. Kumar acknowledged the support of the Fijian government in allowing the sale of consumer fireworks amid restrictions that have impacted many other nations, such as Australia.

As the company approaches its 50th anniversary in 2026, Mahesh Syndicate hopes to continue its legacy of illuminating Diwali celebrations for generations to come, all while prioritizing safety and community engagement. This dedication not only highlights the importance of tradition within the festive framework but also reinforces the spirit of joy amidst challenges, fostering a sense of togetherness in the community.
