Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will restart her donations to the Democratic Party after President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race. Previously, Disney had stated she would cease contributions until Biden was replaced as the party’s candidate.
In an email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her decision to resume support following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. Earlier this month, she voiced her support for Harris and criticized the party for its treatment of women and people of color in leadership roles.
Disney expressed confidence in Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s… and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney’s decision to withhold contributions was part of a broader revolt among elite Democratic donors who were dissatisfied with Biden’s performance, particularly following his debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that this pressure from key donors contributed to Biden’s decision to exit the race. Other prominent donors, including George Soros and his son Alex Soros, have also expressed their support for Harris after Biden’s announcement.
