Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided to withdraw from the reelection race.
Earlier this month, Disney declared that she would halt donations until Biden was replaced as the party’s nominee. However, in an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” after Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.
When she first announced her decision to withhold donations, Disney publicly supported Harris, emphasizing her qualifications. She remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s—and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity—if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney’s revolt against Biden was echoed by several elite Democratic donors, particularly in response to Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. This growing dissatisfaction within the donor class and a decline in financial support were factors contributing to Biden’s decision to step aside.
Notably, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also endorsed Harris following Biden’s announcement.
