Disney Legends Unite: A Night of Star-Studded Moments and Musical Magic

On Sunday evening, August 11, Disney fans gathered at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California for the Disney Legends Ceremony, a unique celebration that stood apart from typical award shows, highlighted by the presence of Mickey Mouse ears everywhere.

This star-studded event marked the conclusion of D23, a three-day festival touted as the “ultimate” fan experience, featuring various panels and showcases. This year’s Legends Ceremony featured an impressive lineup of 14 honorees, including Miley Cyrus, Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett, and Harrison Ford. The Disney Legends Awards, which began 37 years ago, have recognized over 300 iconic figures in that time.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, this year’s ceremony introduced several firsts, including its availability for streaming on Disney+ starting August 12 at 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET. It also marked the first time a costume designer, the 12-time Oscar nominee Colleen Atwood, was honored and celebrated the youngest legend to date, Miley Cyrus.

Disney CEO Bob Iger addressed the audience, stating, “The Disney Legends Award is the highest honor our company bestows. It’s presented as a celebration of talent, a recognition of achievement, and, above all, a sincere expression of our deep gratitude.”

Among the memorable moments, Harrison Ford expressed his affection for fans, saying, “I love the life you have given me,” while Danny DeVito introduced his longtime friend, filmmaker James L. Brooks, known for creating classics like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Simpsons. Additionally, the Dora Milaje from Wakanda assisted filmmaker Ryan Coogler in honoring Angela Bassett. However, the event’s most poignant moments often centered around music.

Here are some of the most notable musical highlights from the Disney Legends Ceremony.
