Disney Heirress Shifts Support: What’s Next for the Democrats?

Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection. Earlier this month, Disney had stated that she would withhold contributions until the party replaced Biden at the top of the ticket.

In an email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her decision, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. When she initially declared her intent to stop donations, Disney expressed her backing for Harris, highlighting her qualifications as a leader.

Disney remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”

Disney was among numerous high-profile donors within the Democratic Party who expressed their discontent with Biden following his poor debate performance against Donald Trump. This dissatisfaction from the donor community, coupled with a decline in financial support, may have contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Prominent Democratic donors like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also shown their endorsement for Harris after Biden’s announcement.
