Heiress Abigail Disney announced she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the race for reelection.
Earlier this month, Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, stated that she would stop making contributions to the party until Biden was replaced as the top candidate. Following Biden’s withdrawal from the race and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, Disney confirmed her renewed support in an email to CNBC, saying, “Yes, I will resume supporting.”
When she initially withheld her donations, Disney expressed her endorsement of Harris. She stated, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats could accept any of her perceived shortcomings even a fraction as much as they have accepted Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if the party can unify around her rather than quibbling, we can win this election decisively.”
Disney was among a group of elite Democratic donors who became disenchanted with Biden following his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that the pressure from donors and a decrease in funding played a role in Biden’s decision to step back from the race.
Additionally, prominent donor George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their support for Harris after the news of Biden’s exit.
