Abigail Disney, an heiress and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, has announced that she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection.
Earlier this month, Disney stated that she would halt her contributions until Biden was replaced at the top of the ticket. However, in a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.
When she first declared her decision to withhold donations, Disney also expressed her backing for Harris. She pointed out the need for Democrats to support Harris despite her perceived shortcomings, arguing that the party has been more forgiving towards Biden. “We have an excellent Vice President… if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot,” she said.
Disney is among a group of influential Democratic donors who became disenchanted with Biden due to his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from donors and a decline in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Following this development, prominent donors like George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their support for Harris.
